National Almanac of Organic Farming

In 1993 the first ever Seminar on Organic Farming in India was held in Jawahar Lal College of Agriculture in Indore, Madhya Pardesh. The seminar was organized by padam Shri TGK Menon and the college and it was attended by 300 people. It was scorned upon by the scientific community.

The All India Organic and Biodynamic Farming Association was formed in Indore in 1995 comprising of retired scientist and activists.

All India Biodynamic Association was formed in Bangalore in 1996. Neem oil pesticide was included in the Central Insecticide Board (CIB).Shri Diwakar Vikram Singh Minister of Agriculture, Up visited MP, Tamil Nadu in 1998 and a small component of ‘Bio-Villages’ was added in the UP. DASP World Bank Project- Nainital, Dehradun & US Nagar were a part of it.

First farmers Suicide Case in Warrangal (AP) came to light in April’98. In 1999-2000 National India Task Force on Organic Farming was formed headed by Kunwar B H Jhadhav, from Rajasthan. The task force recommended Organic Farming in the country with the help of NGO’s, departments and Service Providers. It also identified regions where Organic Farming should be taken up in top priority; Hill regions of UP, North East, Dry lands of MP and Rajasthan. Task Force was submitted to the ministry of agriculture and cooperation.

 
The state of Uttarakhand was formed in Nov 2000. Stress on Organic Farming was made, and welcomed by the organic movement in the country.MP started Organic Farming. CM Shri Digvijay Singh Personally monitored the program in 2001.In 2001, Spice Board started to organize small farmers for export or organic spice, Tea Board recommended Organic Plantations to recover from slump. In May 5th 2002 PM Shri Atal Bihari Vajpaye launched The National Program on Organic Production. APEDA was identified as nodal agency for the program. APEDA declared exports in organic from INDIA has high potential. In the First International Organic Markets Conference held in Nov 2002 several buyers visited Uttaranchal for Organic Products. All Prominent NGO’s, Projects introduced Organic Farming in their program.Center of Organic Farming (COF) funded by Sir Rattan Tata Trust was set up in Uttarakhand. A dedicated organization named Uttaranchal Organic Commodity Board (UOCB) was set up. COF was anchored in UOCB.

The First National Seminar on Organic Farming for mountain States was held in Dehradun in Nov’ 2003. Shri Som Pal, Chairman National Commission for Farmers Stressed on Organic Farming for Mountain States. Karnataka declared its Organic policy; Mizoram and Sikkim joined in the league early 2004. The Maharashtra government declared its most progressive regions are organic priority regions. Facilitated the Maharashtra Organic Farmers Association (MOFA) in April’2004.

ICCOA International Center for competence on Organic agriculture was set up in Bangalore by FiBL, Switzerland in May’2004. The National Program on Organic Farming (NPOF) came into effect from 16 Nov 2004 (late by two and a half years) officially recognizing the Organic Movement in the country.

Second National Seminar on Organic Farming for mountain States , Strategy and Ways ahead was held on July 27-28 , 2006 at Kosi Katarmal , Almora , Uttaranchal. Honourable Agriculture Minister of Uttarakhand Shri Mahendra Singh Mahara were the Chief Guest.
