Trivendra Singh Rawat, Ministry of Agriculture Gov. of Uttarakhand
I am very happy to know that Uttarakhand Organic Commodity Board is coming out with its Annual Report 2007-08.
There is no doubt that Uttarakhand agriculture can gain enormously with the organic approach. While a lot of good work is being done by the board, there are numerous crops in the hill regions which can be developed into marketable products. On one hand the farmers can get a good price and on the other their capacity for self sustenance will increase manifolds. Also the environment of the state shall benefit from the organic farming practices which are a challenge in itself.
Some positive growth has been seen in the organic field in 2007-08 in the state where the farmers have greatly benefited with good prices. Area under certifications has also grown substantially. I congratulate all the organic farmers, workers and officers who have put tremendous effort into the sector. I also congratulate the voluntary sector as well as the private sector working in the field of organic farming who are helping the farmers get better prices. I wish the UCOB a grand success for the forthcoming year.
FRDC/Chairman UOCB
It gives me great pleasure to present the annual report of the board for the year 2007-08. It has been yet another year of success for the board. Area under certification has expanded form 7,000 ha (2006-07) to 16,00 ha (2007-08) in the state and UCOB is proud of the role it has played in the state achieving this level of performance.

The board has facilitated sale of Rs. 489.87 lacs in year 2007-08 as compared to Rs 365 lacs in year 2006-07, covering basmati, millets, vegetables and pluses.
I am in particular concerned about the up-scaling of the pilot projects undertaken by the board assisted by the different programme & projects (COF & NCOF etc). Signs of up scaling are evident in sales figure but much more needs to be done for the commodities in the mountain regions specially in the spices sectors and traditional grains.
In the present year the board is set to focus in institutionalizing extension arrangements as well as farmer groups and move diligently towards long term sustainability. The focus is to strengthen farmer groups into federations and establish direct tie ups with trade agencies especially in the mountain regions.
UCOB has been contributing in providing small farmers avenues for increased income generation. The year 2007-08 has focused on marketing of less commercial grains like finger millet and foxtail millet where substantial results has been found.
I would like to acknowledge the yeoman contribution of all donors and funding agencies especially SRTT, Mumbai towards marking Organic Uttarakhand a successful brand.
All personnel and farmers associated with UCOB deserve to be congratulated for the sustained hard work put in. the will need to preserver further in order to preserve for Uttarakhand the leadership position it has acquired in states of the Union and beyond.
