Policy Initiatives

Reduction of external inputs, as in the case in organic agriculture is the key to economic and ecological rejuvenation of Uttaranchal. Organic Agriculture can lead to a very cost-effective rejuvenation of hill agriculture and is envisioned to bring about the over all rural development of the state.

Institutional support from the government projects dedicated to organic farming enables other logistical support like godowns and stores in the mountain regions. Local level certification agency and Internal Control Systems shall bring about a decrease in certification costs. Batteries of extension workers are available full time that can be linked to trade houses to establish direct contact with organic producers.

Uttaranchal is home to commodities of high value and low volume like Amaranthus, medicinal plants, herbs, course grains, seeds, preserved fruits, oils etc. Indigenous and course grains like amaranthus, finger millet, black soybean, horse gram etc. are fast gaining popularity as essentially health foods. Many commodities like Rajma from specific regions like Munsiari (Distt. Pithoragrah), Rawain Valley (Distt. Uttarkashi), Gopeshwar (Distt. Chamoli) etc. in Uttaranchal are all set to be exposed as branded products. These products are superior in taste and nutrient content due to traditional production methods and indigenous seeds.

Organized organic farming programmes initiated by NGO's or government are around three years old and the response is already encouraging. An increasing number of farmers want to come under the organic programme. Farmers have also organized themselves into organic farmer federations at village and block levels.

In the next five years it is envisaged that over 500 villages will be producing a range of organic commodities for domestic and export markets. These commodities will be covered under Internal Control Systems for management of production and certification. The areas covered under organized organic farm practices shall be nothing less than 5000 acres. Product range will include coarse grains like millets, preserved fruits, medicinal herbs, Basmati rice, organic vegetable seed; non perishable products like tea and fresh vegetables, continental vegetables and salads, fruits, juices, pulps and other value added products like 'muesli', cereal meals etc. in the perishable product category.

More than 6000 families have already been sensitized towards organized organic farming systems like composting, manuring, companion plants, herbal pest management and use of the planting calendar. In the coming years more than 10,000 families shall come under the umbrella of farming and processing aspects of the organic movement. In the future, skilled and trained personnel can be sent to other states and developing countries to assist their respective farmers.

The growing popularity of organic agriculture in Uttaranchal will further open avenues to business opportunities for processing industry, packaging industry, export trade houses, carrier and forwarding agents, transporting agencies and a host of other industries in the state.

Bio villages shall provide ideal places for stay under the hospitality sector and shall also be important destinations for tourism industry.
